You’re safe now!
You’re safe now!
If you where to rescue a child from danger, this is one of the first things you will try to convince them of.
Paul is attempting to convince the Roman believers that through justification by faith, they are now safe.

Paul’s main point - peace with God
So that we can rejoice in our relationship with God (vv. 2, 3, 11).
This relationship is our standing (vv. 1-3).
Which is the constant security in our suffering (vv. 4-5)
Paul’s points out (v. 5) what stirs us to acknowledge this and enjoy this...
God’s Love
God’s Love
This is a significant aspect of this peace (this relationship) (v. 5).
So, Paul expands on this (vv. 6-11).
God loves His children though the work of the Holy Spirit (v. 5).
God has loved His children through the death of His Son (vv. 6-11).
This is the PROOF of God’s love. Assurance for His on-going love is His past love.
God’s ongoing love through the Holy Spirit will continue because of His past love through His Son.
Let’s answer 3 questions from this text to consider God’s love...

“For”… (v. 6) - this connects his statement in verse 5 with 6-11 (God’s love)
“While we were still” - in that time
“Weak” / “helpless” - without strength, unable
Like prisoners, dead, blind
“Right time” - appropriate, proper, set, appointed, occasion,
When planned (Ephesians 1:9–10; Galatians 4:4–5)
When needed - “while we were still” (vv. 6 & 8)
“Died for” - in their place, for their sins (1 John 4:10)
In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
“Ungodly” - against God
Christ did what was necessary when it was necessary.
“For”… (v. 7) - Paul enhances this with a contrast...
“Scarcely” / “hardly” - with difficulty, rarely
“Righteous” - morally just or upright
“Good” - helpful to others, beneficial
“dare” - show boldness or courage, bring oneself to
Characterized by, estimated to be, seen as, from the perspective of another
These words bring in the idea that someone might see another person as being worthy of dying for.
And, they may even go as far as to die for them in order to save them. It has happened.
“But”… (v. 8) - contrast to that...
“Shows” - demonstrate, prove - what kind of love God gives.
“While we were still” - in that time
“Sinners” - God knows what we are really like
God gave Himself and His Son (1 John 3:16)
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
What will be done? (vv. 9-10)

Since God did this...
“Justified” - rendered righteous
“By His blood” - reminder of the agony, violence, and suffering
He will certainly do this...
“Saved” - rescued, delivered
“From the wrath of God” - future punishment
And again…since God did this...
“Enemies” - hostile against
“Reconciled” - “The exchange of hostility for a friendly relationship” (BDAG)(2 Corinthians 5:18–19)
“By the death of His Son” - no greater cost
He will certainly do this.
“Saved” - rescued, delivered
“By His life” - which is what our life depends on (4:23-25; Ephesians 2:5–6; Colossians 3:1)
even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
If we believe this…then we can be sure of this...(Colossians 1:21–22).
And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,

“More than that”/ “not only this”
There’s more to say/point out about this.
Further meaning or significance to all of this.
“Rejoice”/ “exult” - glory in, celebrate
This is the verb in these verses for us to do. It is present.
We have a past, we have a future, but this is our present.
This answers the question, “What do we do NOW with all of this?”
“Through”
Summarizing what he has just said
Because of what God and Christ has done
“We have now received”
It has been given to us
It is ours’
“Reconciliation”
“The exchange of hostility for a friendly relationship” (BDAG)
Therefore, we have peace with God (Philippians 4:4).
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.

Do you believe this? Are you doing this?
We don’t have to look for joy somewhere else. There’s no substitute.
